DragonSword: Awakening – Combat Tips and Tier List

DragonSword: Awakening is a buy-to-play anime action RPG—no gacha, no loot boxes, no stamina gates. Every hero is earned through story tickets, exploration, and the Exchange menu. This guide focuses on combat tricks that separate smooth clears from sloppy wipes, then ranks the eight Characters in our current database so you pick the right Fate's Invitation targets.

The Steam Next Fest demo includes Alex, Aria, Castella, Lute, Ornette, Renia, Roxy, and Theresia—use them to practice swap timing and [Airborne] chains before the full release.

Core Combat Mechanics & Tips

Master these three systems and your DPS climbs without grinding extra levels.

Character-Switch Delay (Off-Hand Skills)

When a character starts a long animation—Castella's spear vortex, Alex's charged greatsword swing, or any skill that keeps them locked in place—switch immediately. The previous hero stays on field and finishes the attack while you control someone else. Two bodies attacking at once stacks damage faster than mashing one kit.

That overlap also feeds Signal Skill windows: let one hero apply [Freeze] or [Knockdown], swap, and fire the follow-up before the first character's animation ends.

Aggressive swaps shorten downtime—break poise, chain Status Ailments, and trigger Signal Skill follow-ups.

Grab Mechanic (Boss Fight Multiplier)

Large enemies and world bosses expose a Grab prompt after certain poise breaks. Accept it and your hero mounts the target for sustained damage. Switch again while mounted—the grabbed character keeps attacking on the boss while your active hero free-casts from the ground. That double-source DPS is one of the highest-return tricks in co-op and solo alike.

Airborne Combos

Watch the white poise bar under an enemy health bar. Empty it and the target staggers—prime time for launchers marked with the blue wing icon ([Airborne]).

Characters with [Airborne] skills knock foes into juggle state where they cannot fight back. The longer your aerial chain, the longer the enemy is effectively stunned. Castella and Ornette excel at launching and extending juggles; map who applies and who triggers in the Team Combo Simulator before you commit tickets.

Character Recruitment

Fate's Invitation is the only currency for recruiting new heroes from the Exchange tab—no random banners, no paid pulls. You receive one ticket early, then earn more from main-story chapters and Hero Quest lines.

Important limitation: you cannot preview unrecruited heroes' full skill kits in-game. Use the tier list below and our linked Characters database entries before spending tickets.

Character Tier List (Current Roster)

Tiers rank the eight heroes tracked in our wiki—control utility, ailment coverage, and how forgiving each kit feels in the demo and early story.

Compare all eight roster entries before spending Fate's Invitations—the in-game Exchange does not preview full skill kits.

Castella — Windrunner lance specialist and the roster's clearest [Airborne] applier. Gale Thrust launches lighter targets; Cyclone Spear Switch relaunches [Knockdown] foes back into juggle state. Core pick for any launch-heavy trio.

RoxyCrimson Striker built around [Bleed] and mobility. Blood Rush stacks bleed quickly; Sanguine Drop bursts during [Airborne] for high spike damage. Ideal for kiting elites while a frontliner breaks poise.

ReniaFrost Alchemist who coats zones in Spirit Ice Mist until targets hit [Freeze]. Sets up Lute's Icebreaker Switch and other freeze triggers—essential for freeze-first squads.

AlexFrontline Breaker with greatsword poise damage. Heavy Cleave applies [Knockdown]; Rising Break triggers on [Airborne] to extend juggles. Reliable anchor for stagger-and-launch teams.

T2 — Solid Picks (Situational / Balanced)

Ornette — Magitech frost gunner. Cryo Burst builds toward [Freeze]; Aerial Detonation extends [Airborne] chains. Strong alternate freeze slot if Renia already fills setup duty.

Lute — Fated Blade and story protagonist. Mercenary Slash applies [Knockdown]; Icebreaker Switch answers ally [Freeze]. Solid support DPS and healing—build your primary trio first, then invest here.

TheresiaHoly Sanctum Inquisitor stacking [Shock] via Sacred Judgement. Sanctified Execution punishes [Knockdown]—excellent against armored elites that need stagger follow-ups.

AriaSanctum Channeler with holy control tools. Radiant Lance applies [Shock]; Judgment Switch triggers on [Knockdown]. Slightly more setup-heavy than Theresia but strong in coordinated squads.

Freeze → shatter → relaunch: Renia, Lute, Castella[Freeze] setup, Icebreaker Switch, then [Airborne] extension.

Pure stagger pressure: Castella, Alex, Roxy[Knockdown] breaks, [Airborne] juggles, [Bleed] burst.

Dry-run both lines in the Team Combo Simulator before spending tickets.

Character Growth Tips

Demo access: All eight heroes above are playable in the Steam Next Fest demo—learn swap timing and Signal Skill routes before launch.

Ticket priority: If you already main Lute, recruit a dedicated [Freeze] or [Airborne] partner (Renia or Castella) before duplicating overlapping roles.

Squad composition: Run at least one [Airborne] applier and one ranged or frost setup hero so you can break poise, launch, and finish juggles safely. Cross-reference Status Ailments for combo rules.

Life skills: Cooking (seafood stew and similar recipes) uses gatherable Materials. Food buffs matter in late dungeons—invest in cooking alongside gear crafting.
